The Student Route: How to Transition from Au Pair to a Fully Funded Scholarship
Most people use their Au Pair year just to take photos in front of the Eiffel Tower or the Brandenburg Gate. That’s cool, but if you want to stay abroad permanently and build a real career, you need to use that year as a "Pre-University Year." In many developed countries, especially in Europe, education is either free or heavily subsidized. If you are already on the ground as an Au Pair, you have a massive advantage over someone applying from Africa or Asia. Here is your step-by-step "Ninja" guide to going from an Au Pair to a scholar with zero debt.
Universities and scholarship boards love students who have already lived abroad. Why?
You cannot wait until your Au Pair contract ends to look for a scholarship. You have to start the moment you land.
Enroll in the classes your host family is required to help you pay for.
Look for "International Student Scholarships" in your host country (e.g., DAAD, Eiffel Excellence, Holland Scholarships).
Get high school certificates/degrees translated and "Certified" locally. It’s cheaper and faster.
Send your applications and prepare for the transition.
Each country has a "secret door" for students. Here is the general landscape:
- 🇩🇪 Germany & Austria: Public universities are Tuition-Free. "Fully Funded" scholarships (like DAAD) often pay health insurance + ~€900 monthly stipend.
- 🇫🇷 France: Master French during your Au Pair year to enter public universities at low cost. Eiffel scholarships cover almost everything.
- 🇳🇴 Nordic Countries: While some have fees, many specialized "Global Talent" scholarships cover 100% costs for residents.
- 🇺🇸 USA: Use your required "Educational Credits" as an Au Pair to impress local Community Colleges and ask about "International Student Aid."
When writing your "Motivation Letter," don't just talk about grades. Use your Au Pair experience. Use this structure:
"Over the past year, living as an Au Pair in [Country], I have not only mastered the language but also gained a deep understanding of the local culture and work ethic. This experience has prepared me to excel in [Mention your Course] at your university.
Having lived and worked within a [Local Nationality] family, I am uniquely positioned to contribute a global perspective to your campus while being fully integrated into the local society."
In most European countries, if you get an admission letter from a university and a scholarship offer, you can go to the local "Immigration Office" (Ausländerbehörde) and switch your visa from Au Pair to Student.
Your Au Pair year is a bridge. On one side is your home country; on the other side is a global career. Don't just walk across the bridge and stop in the middle. Keep moving until you reach the university gates.
You are already there. You have the visa. You have the language. Now, go get that degree!
(Note: What did you study back home? Tell me your degree in the comments, and I will tell you which European scholarship fits your profile best. Let’s get you that fully funded spot!)
